The BBC and others are reporting that Paris Hilton is backing an online petition, apparently created by a Paris fan named Joshua (of course it was a guy!), which asks California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon the 45-day prison sentence that Paris recently picked up for violating her probation for a drunk-driving conviction. The petition also claims that Paris is being used as a "scapegoat to highlight the dangers of drunk-driving".The reason we should let Paris skate?
In the petition message on his MySpace website, Joshua paints Ms. Hilton as a role model who "provides hope for young people all over the US and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives". It also draws parallels between other high-profile figures who were forgiven for their misdeeds. "If the late former President Gerald Ford could find it in his heart to pardon the late former President Richard Nixon after his mistake(s), we undeniably support Paris Hilton being pardoned for her honest mistake," it says.

Today in the news there is a bit about how Verizon thinks it is not only legal to hand over customer data to the NSA whenever asked for it, but it is actually their RIGHT to do so!Verizon is claiming that they have the right to hand over customer information to the US government under the First Amendment. Yep, you read that right... they think that acting in collusion with the Federal government to provide what for years they have claimed is "private and confidential customer data" is actually not only NOT illegal, but their protected right under the "freedom of speech" amendment!
