I'll be damned, it works.

I think I finally got all the "default template" type crap cleaned up off the site, so I guess it is officially mine. All told, installing and setting up this Pivot blog software was cool as hell. I simply modified and uploaded a small PHP installer script onto my server, ran it from a browser, and it automatically retrieved all the files necessary to configure the blog. It was fascinating to watch it say it was downloading an unzip tool because my server didn't have one, watch as it snagged the latest build from Sourceforge... just cool as hell. Still thinking like a Luddite I then copied the whole thing back to my computer and started to look for files to edit when I realized the whole thing was editable ONLINE via my browser. After much poking about and forming an understanding of the structure I got all the "Welcome to My Blog" stuff changed, although for the moment I have left all graphics and color schemes intact. I'll futz with that once I uderstand it better.
